Marcin Jarzebski, Linda Chinangwa and our local partner Davies Luhanga (COMSIP) have been doing fieldwork in the sugarcane areas of Dwangwa in central Malawi. They have been undertaking an extensive household survey in Chichewa language that captures the agro-economic practices, natural resource use, food security and coping strategies, and women empowerment of local communities. This is supplemented by anthropometric measurements of children and their parents.
This fieldwork campaign is part of project FICESSA, and aims to comprehensively evaluate the impact of sugarcane production in the area. It targets approximately 550-600 households of sugarcane estate workers (from the Illovo estate), irrigated and rainfed smallholders, as well as subsistence farmers within (and outside) the sugarcane belt.
